Brief History of the UC Davis Biotechnology Program
- The Biotechnology Program was created in 1986 by Charles Hess, Dean of the College of
Agricultural & Environmental Sciences and a core group of visionary scientists.
- Prof. Tsune Kosuge was appointed as the first Director in 1988. Unfortunately, he passed away
in 1988 (Monsanto honors his memory each year with the Kosuge Lecture) and Prof. George Bruening became the interim director.
- The Program then took shape under Prof. Roy Doi, when the first NIH Biotechnology Training Grant was awarded in
1991. He served as director from 1989-92. Martina Newell McGloughlin was the
Associate Director during this time.
- In 1993, it was decided that the Biotechnology Program would report to the Office of Research.
Oversight would be a joint effort by: OVCR; CA&ES; College of Engineering; College of Letters & Sciences; Division of
Biological Sciences; School of Medicine and School of Veterinary Medicine.
- The founding Biotechnology Advisory Committee (BAC) Members included: Gary Anderson; Alan Bennett; George Bruening
(Chair); Don Carlson; Roy Doi; Bruce Hammock; Paul Luciw; and Tilahun Yilma.
- In the mid-90’s, Dr. Martina Newell McGloughlin served as Director and created many of
the existing programs. In April 1999, Dr. Judy Kjelstrom became Associate Director. Vice
Chancellor Kevin Smith of the Office of Research oversaw the Program.
- Oct. 2002 – Dr. Judy Kjelstrom became acting director, when Dr. Martina Newell
McGloughlin took over the directorship of UC BREP (moved the program to UC Davis). The Program reported to VC Barry
Klein of the Office of Research.
- Sept 2004 – Dr. Judy Kjelstrom was named Director. Program oversight was given to
Associate VC Alan Bennett of the Office of Research.
- Jan. 2005 – Roy Doi and Don Carlson stepped down from the BAC.
George Bruening resigned as Chair but remained on the BAC. Bruce Hammock was elected interim BAC
Chair.
- May 2005 – new BAC members appointed: Kit Lam; Karen McDonald; Richard Michelmore; Martina
